9 Super Easy Ways To Stop Air Pollution

Stopping pollution is important for the survival of our planet, and even more importantly, the health and well-being of the people who depend on it. The air we breathe is laden with hazardous contaminants, and our oceans and waterways have been poisoned with chemicals.

Left unabated, pollution could leave us with a planet earth sapped of its beauty, vitality, and diversity. Keep reading to learn about some practical ways that you can help stop pollution.

In this article, we’re going to give you 10 different ideas that you can try out for yourself so that you can contribute to stopping air pollution in your area and in the world around you.

1. Use Public Transportation

One of the best things you can do to help stop pollution is to stop using your car for short trips. If the weather is nice and you don’t have too far to go, consider walking or riding your bike. You will help reduce air pollution and if you have access to good public transportation where you live, take advantage of it. Since you won’t have to worry about keeping your eyes on the road, you can take advantage of the time to read, catch up on news, or just relax.

2. Drive Smart

Making lots of little trips over the course of a few days contributes more pollution to the environment every time you hop in your car. Instead of running your errands over the course of a few days, try to consolidate them into one round trip. Consolidating your trips into one long trip will also save you money since starting your car when the engine is cold consumes 20% more fuel than driving your car

3. Do Regular Car Check Up

Its important for you to go for regular check up of your car to make sure it does not consume extra fuel. This will not only save you money but your car will also last longer.

4. Keep Car Tires Properly Inflated

Car consume more fuel when tires are not properly inflated and aligned. Keeping them properly inflated will lessen your impact on the environment.

5. Buy Energy Efficient Vehicles

electric cars run on electricity alone, so they are zero emission vehicles. Hybrid cars use a combination of electricity and fuel to run. While electric cars are the least polluting, both options will help stop pollution. Although they still use some gas to run, hybrid cars have much better fuel economy than regular cars and emit fewer greenhouse gases than traditional cars.

6. Consider “going green”

There are so many options for going green out there and a lot of them come with tax breaks that can make it even easier for you to do so. Look into your local, state, and even federal initiatives in order to see if they have something that can help you change your tune.

7. Plant a Garden

Plant a garden that is going to give the air the nutrients that it needs to be cleaner. There are so many plants out there that will eat up the junk in the atmosphere. Do your research and see what one(s) you can grow easily and that will help the world around you.  Another important thing is to plant a few types of plants in your home to reduce pollution to can check them out by clicking on this link.

8. Use Low-VOC or Water-based Paints

Use paints that are based with water and not oil. The less oil products that you are using, the better off that you’re going to be because that means less oil is being produced overall.

9. Turn Off Lights When not in Use

Don’t keep the lights or other electric devices on. The more traditional power that you are using, the more energy you’re wasting and the more that you’re polluting the air.

This is one of the few methods which can help reduce pollution. Another important thing is to plant a few types of plants in your home to reduce pollution.

During the late 1980’s, NASA began studying houseplants as a means of providing purer and cleaner air for space stations. What they learned is that there are many different houseplants that can help to purify the air.
The plants filter out certain harmful compounds in the air and make it much healthier to breathe. The good news for you is that these plants are easily found and you can add them to your home to provide yourself and your family with air that is much purer and free from harmful agents.

This plant will enhance the life conditions around you. This is because of the plant’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen at night. Snake plants don’t need much light or water to survive, so they’re an easy choice for any corner of your home.

Pollutants removed: benzene, formaldehyde, trichloro ethylene, and xylene

Spider plants are among the easiest houseplants to grow, making them a great choice for beginners or forgetful owners. A fan of bright, indirect sunlight, spider plants will send out shoots with flowers that eventually grow into baby spider plants.

Pollutants removed: formaldehyde and xylene

Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)  in your living room can help filter out pollutants that typically accompany carpeting and furniture .Caring for a ficus can be tricky, but once you get the watering and light conditions right, they will last a long time.

Pollutants removed: benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloro ethylene

Peace lily plants are relatively small compared to many of the plants on this list, but they still pack some major air-cleaning abilities. Easy to grow, these plants will flower for much of the summer. Put peace lilies in a shady spot and keep the soil moist without over-watering.

Pollutants removed: ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloro ethylene

A superstar of filtering formaldehyde, these palms thrive in full sun or bright light. Part of the reason they can filter so much air is that they can grow to be pretty big—as tall as four to 12 feet high, making them exciting (and pet-friendly) indoor additions.

Pollutants removed: benzene, formaldehyde, trichloro ethylene

In addition to being easy to care for, aloe makes some serious health claims. The plant’s leaves contain a clear liquid full of vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, and other compounds that have wound-healing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Pollutant removed: formaldehyde

In the NASA research, this plant was an air-purifying champion, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene from indoor air. Popular and inexpensive at garden stores, they can be planted outside after they’re finished blooming.

Pollutants removed: ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene

NASA considered this plant one of the most effective choices for eliminating formaldehyde. People that have struggled to keep plants alive can rejoice – this one is incredibly hard to kill. It doubles as an effective eliminator of carbon monoxide as well.

Pollutants removed: carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.

Plant a tree today for a greener tomorrow!!

Each time the galaxy is in danger, the Guardians swoop in to fight the evil forces. But have you ever wondered why “A man made out of twigs and branches- named GROOT” secured a respectable position with the Guardians? You might think how a body composed of mere twigs and branches was capable of fighting the evil forces. Well, this is exactly, what the article addresses.

“Apocalypse of the Environment” is not far away. The recent global trends indicate the degradation of our Mother Nature at an alarming rate. Our blame-game is real strong but when will we blame the real culprits who are causing havoc all over the world. THE VERY PLANET THAT GAVE BIRTH TO MAN IS BEING DESTROYED BY MAN. And that is why the elements of nature had to take up the task of guarding the environment. This also resolves the mystery of why GROOT is a Guardian of the galaxy as well as A GUARDIAN OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

“Give me a tree and I will save the world”– this phrase perfectly describes the significance of plants. All the biotic components of our ecosystem play a major role in protecting our environment. But specifically, Trees have the biggest role to play in guarding the environment. They act as the lungs of the planet and if the respiratory tract gets impaired then the body shall not survive for more than a day. Hence, trees maintain the dynamics of the environment extremely well. Additionally, they provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. The more our planet will be covered with natural vegetation, the lesser will be the chances of Green house effect harming the environment. Trees also reduce the ozone levels from the atmosphere. In New York City, a 10 percent increase in urban canopy translated to a reduction of peak ozone levels by around 4 parts per billion. (Source: Luley, Christopher J.; Nowak, David J. 2004.

There are numerous reasons as to why trees are the ultimate saviours of our environment. A few of them are mentioned here. Trees combat climate change; they provide clean filtered air; they conserve energy; help to prevent water pollution; prevent soil erosion; provide a canopy and a habitat for wildlife; inherit medicinal values and so on. Hence trees are the true Guardians of the environment.
Now, let us figure out why Agent K appointed a dog as a member of the “Men in Black” team. The very question that comes to our mind is how could a dog fight the evil forces?

Animals already play an important role in maintaining the delicate balance of life on earth in their respective ecosystems. But apart from the natural help they provide, some animal friends are going above and beyond the call of duty to help humankind heal the damage we’ve done to the planet. Humankind has long looked to its best friend to lend a helping nose – whether it’s a hunter tracking down prey or a police officer searching for drugs. Now groups like Working Dogs for Conservation and UK-based Conservation Dogs use dogs to sniff out endangered animals and plants – like jaguars in the Amazon or black bears in China – so researchers can track and save them.

Not only dogs, but other animals like bees, rats, octopi, sea lions, seals, mules, birds and so on contribute to the environment in a number of ways. Their mere presence helps to maintain the dynamics of a food chain. Hence, this is how animals do their bit to guard the environment.

But these guardians are being smashed and destroyed by Man to fulfill his needs. He has gone to such an extent that if he doesn’t put an end to this destruction, then Apocalypse is sure to follow. Trees and animals will perform their task of guarding the environment but when will Man understand his sacred duty to protect these guardians and to protect the environment. What will be left of him if he does not guard his home? Man can guard the environment by planting trees; protecting animals by putting an end to hunting and poaching; reducing air, water, land and noise pollution; using the 3 R’s – Recycle, Reduce, Reuse and so on. This is high time for Man to perform these tasks for the welfare of the environment and primarily for his own welfare.

Coldplay is coming to Mumbai and you can watch it for free. Here’s how!

Coldplay is coming to Mumbai and you can watch it for free. Here’s how!

British band Coldplay will have their first-ever concert in Mumbai on November 19 as part of the Global Citizen Festival, the organisers tweeted on Saturday. And, turns out, fans can get tickets for free by taking a series of action.

There was much speculation that the tickets would be priced at Rs 25,000 and above with the highest going up to Rs 5 lakhs. It is still not clear if tickets will be sold at all. However, it is clear that free tickets are available.

Fans can take part via phone, email and social media campaigns and earn points which can be redeemed as concert passes once they have enough, reports Buzzfeed.

Chris Martin, the lead vocalist of the band, is the creative director of its Global Citizen Festival.

The Global Citizen Festival, established in 2012, takes place each year in New York’s Central Park on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to push world leaders to put anti-poverty efforts high on the agenda.

“Just like our annual festival in Central Park, tickets to the Indian festival will be free,” the festival said on its website.

It noted that the Mumbai concert would take place on World Toilet Day, which draws attention to sanitation problems.

While most Coldplay fans likely have indoor plumbing, around half of Indians do not have regular access to modern toilets, presenting a major public health hazard.

India is not a new interest for Coldplay, whose video for Hymn for the Weekend, released in January, was shot in the country, although critics said it presented stereotypical images.

The latest New York edition of the Global Citizen Festival, to take place on September 24, will feature R&B superstar Rihanna, metal greats Metallica and leading rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared at the festival in 2014 to lend his support to its goals.

5 health benefits of houseplants

5 health benefits of houseplants

Houseplants have been going in and out of vogue ever since the early Greeks and Romans starting bringing their plants in from the outdoors. The Victorians loved their potted palms and the 70s wouldn’t have been the same without ferns and spider plants … everywhere. Current style dictates a lighter hand with the green things – sculptural stems and succulents rule the roost – but the truth is this: Houseplants should transcend trends. The benefits they confer should make us consider them a necessity rather than an object of décor, because honestly, good health should never be out of style. If you need convincing, here are some of the ways that bringing plants inside helps us out.

1. They give an assist in breathing

Inhaling brings oxygen into the body, exhaling releases carbon dioxide. During photosynthesis, plants do the opposite, of sorts: They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making plants and people great partners when it comes to gasses. Plants help to increase oxygen levels, and our bodies appreciate that.

But here’s something to know: When photosynthesis stops at night, most plants switch things up and absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. However, a few special plants – like orchids, succulents and epiphytic bromeliads – flip that script and take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Meaning, use these plants in bedrooms to keep the oxygen flowing at night.

2. They help deter illness

In the great outdoors, plant roots tap the groundwater table for water which then evaporates through its leaves in a process known as transpiration. Studies show that this accounts for about 10 percent of the moisture in the atmosphere! The same thing happens at home (minus the groundwater table part), which increases the humidity indoors. While this may sound unappealing during hot moist months, it’s a gift during drier months or if you live in an arid clime. According to Bayer Advanced, studies at the Agricultural University of Norway document that using plants in interior spaces decreases the incidence of dry skin, colds, sore throats and dry coughs. And other research reveals that higher absolute humidity is conducive for decreased survival and transmission of the flu virus.Benefits of houseplantsPixabay/Public Domain

3. They clean the air

NASA has spent a lot of time researching air quality in sealed environments, which makes sense. Extensive research by the space agency discovered a then-new concept in indoor air quality improvement in which plants play a pivtoal role: “Both plant leaves and roots are utilised in removing trace levels of toxic vapours from inside tightly sealed buildings. Low levels of chemicals such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde can be removed from indoor environments by plant leaves alone.” When talking about the relationship between plants and space travellers, NASA notes that plants, “provide nourishment for the body when eaten as food, and they improve the quality of indoor air. Plants take the carbon dioxide from air to produce oxygen that humans can breathe.”

The top 10 plants for removing indoor pollutants, according to the agency are: Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii), golden pothos (Scindapsus aures), English ivy (Hedera helix), chrysanthemum (Chrysantheium morifolium), gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii), mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’), bamboo palm (Chamaedorea sefritzii), azalea (Rhododendron simsii), red-edge dracaena (Dracaena marginata) and spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). For more on these specific plants, see:Houseplants that clean the air.

The NASA researchers recommend one potted plant per 100 square feet of indoor space.

4. They boost healing

Bringing flowers or a plant while visiting a hospital patient may be verging on cliché, but so effective are plants in helping surgery patients recover that one study recommends them as a “noninvasive, inexpensive, and effective complementary medicine for surgical patients.” Plants as medicine! The study, conducted at Kansas State University, found that viewing plants during recovery from surgery led to a significant improvement in physiologic responses as evidenced by lower systolic blood pressure, and lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue as compared to patients without plants in their rooms.

Another technique to decrease recovery time, as noted by Texas A&M University, is horticulture therapy in which patients are tasked with taking care of plants. The patients who physically interact with plants experience a significantly reduced recovery time after medical procedures.

5. They help you work better

What? How? A number of studies with both students and workers reveals that studying or working in the presence of plants can have a pretty dramatic effect. As with simply being in nature, being around plants improves concentration, memory and productivity. Being “under the influence of plants” can increase memory retention up to 20 percent, according to a University of Michigan study.

Meanwhile, two Norwegian studies found that worker productivity is greatly enhanced by the presence of plants in the office. “Keeping ornamental plants in the home and in the workplace increases memory retention and concentration,” notes Texas A&M. “Work performed under the natural influence of ornamental plants is normally of higher quality and completed with a much higher accuracy rate than work done in environments devoid of nature.”

The Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idols Which Grows Into A Tree

The Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idols Which Grows Into A Tree

A year ago, a 30-year-old Lower Parel resident had experimented in making an idol which can later be watered to grow a tree. As he succeeded in doing so, Dattadri Kothur posted his innovative idea named ‘Tree Ganesh’ on the social media and received much appreciation for it. This year, when he started making such idols for sale, within two days, over 300 people called him to book them in advance.

The idol is made up of red soil, organic fertiliser and lady finger seeds. Talking about how he started to make this eco-friendly ganpati idol, Kothur, said: “Last year, I made one Ganesh idol as an experiment to see if it is a feasible initiative. The aim is to reduce the pollution level and the harmful effect on environment caused due to the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP). The concept helps to contribute to the environment while we celebrate festivals.”

In May 2015, Kothur did a basic course of gardening in nursery to learn about the technical details before starting this own initiative. The seed are mixed with mud to make the idol and they are also inserted into the mud pot. It takes one week for an idol to be completed. “The seeds and organic fertilisers are brought from Byculla nursery while the red soil is brought from Kumbharwada area in Dharavi. The organic fertiliser does not allow the seeds to dry up.”

Rather than immersing the idol in a water body, people will have to water the idol everyday so that the idol start melting in the mud pot attached with it and the seed germination process begins. “People should pour three mugs of water everyday so that the idol gets converted into mud. Within a week, the seeds start sprouting.”

The size of the idols ranges from 12 to 20 inches according to the order made by the customers.

For 14 years, Kothur has been making eco-friendly Ganesh idols to celebrate the festival at his home. Learning about the initiative, he got calls, WhatsApp messages and mails from various cities. But this year, he will be delivering idols only in Mumbai and Pune. “A few foreign customers will be asking their relatives to collect the idols from the workshop,” said Kothur.

Don’t immerse, just water it
